Tea Research Association popularly known as TRA Tocklai looks after the research and development needs of the Indian tea industry. It carries out and promotes research on tea with the principal objective of improving overall productivity and quality. It is a pioneer in the research and development on tea and an innovator in providing extension services to the tea industry. Research on all aspects of tea cultivation is carried out at Tocklai Tea Research Institute, Jorhat, Assam and at North Bengal R&D Centre, Nagrakata, West Bengal. The increase in productivity from 424 kg/ha in 1900 to about 2153 kg/ha (2017) is a reflection of the impact that Tocklai has had on the tea industry. TRA’s extensive advisory network offers extension services to 1076 tea estates, covering 3,41,049 hectares of land, spread over the Jorhat, Thakurbari, Dibrugarh, Cachar, Agartala, Nagrakata, Darjeeling, Terai, Itanagar and Umsing in Meghalaya . Membership is voluntary and open to the tea industry, small tea growers, bought tea leaf factories and companies dealing with tea related products.
